We recently tried two of Toronto’s most famous dumpling houses just steps from College and Spadina that will not disappoint.
Located at 421 Spadina Avenue, Mother’s Dumplings is a Chinatown staple and only a three-minute walk from Waverley. The restaurant is spacious with plenty of seating. This buzzing atmosphere gets busy, especially during lunchtime hours and for good reason. The dumplings at Mother’s Dumplings are all handmade prepared fresh on the spot. Choose from boiled, steamed, or pan-fried dumplings. Traditional fillings like pork, chicken, and beef are on the menu along with tasty vegetarian options. We sampled two steamed varieties: classic pork & chives and shrimp, egg & chives. The soft, steamy dumplings were bursting with flavour and brought pure joy with every bite. The hand-made dumplings were assembled with care and tasted totally authentic.
This Chinatown gem is a six-minute walk from Waverley, located at 328 Spadina Avenue. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming upon arrival. Our favourite part was watching the staff cook our meal right in front of us. The dumplings are hand made by the front window so visitors and passersby can watch the cooks roll dumplings live. Whether you are looking for crispy pan-fried or soft and chewy steamed dumplings, Dumpling House has options that will leave you feeling satisfied. Made with fresh and delicious ingredients, the dumplings were generously filled with meat and exploding with flavour. We tried two steamed options: pork & chives and minced chicken dumplings. The two flavours were equally delicious, and the hot chili sauce added the perfect amount of heat. Given the large portions and fair prices, Dumpling House is the spot to go when craving a mouthwatering meal. Do not forget that Dumpling House is cash only.
